Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
