A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
