European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
